The heart of it

Visibility should lead to opportunity. Sistra exists to bring greater attention to women doing meaningful work around the world, and to create more ways for that attention to translate into customers, collaborators, experiences and income.

The impact, in short

Visibility

Put her work on the map

Bringing greater attention to women-led businesses, cultural projects and social enterprises that deserve a wider audience.

Discoverability

Make her easier to find

Building strong editorial pages designed for search, SEO and emerging AI discovery so meaningful projects can be found beyond their existing audience.

Economic Opportunity

Turn attention into support

Connecting discovery with tangible ways to buy, book, visit, participate and support the women featured.

What Comes Next

Create new ways to earn

Developing experiences, collaborations and learning opportunities that can help women generate additional income from the knowledge and expertise they already hold.

What it is

Sistra is a global platform dedicated to discovering and elevating women-led work worth knowing.

Its editorial directory brings together businesses, collectives, creative practices, cultural initiatives and social enterprises from around the world — particularly projects making a meaningful contribution to people, culture, community, place or planet.

But Sistra is not simply a directory.

Each feature is designed to give the work greater context and a stronger digital footprint: who is behind it, why it exists, what difference it makes and how someone can meaningfully engage with or support it.

That includes building editorial pages with search and long-term discoverability in mind, helping projects become easier to find through traditional search and emerging AI-driven discovery.

Sistra is also developing ways for discovery to move beyond the screen.

Through gatherings, Sistra Journeys, collaborations and future learning experiences, the platform creates opportunities for people to meet, learn from and directly support the women behind the work.

The longer-term aim is simple: help meaningful women-led work become more visible, more discoverable and more economically supported.

What stayed with me wasn’t only the beauty … but the power of women creating together.

The craft & its context

Sistra advocates for a shift in how traditional and Indigenous cultures are represented, treating cultural practices as living and contemporary rather than historical scenery.

The Editorial Principle

Sistra follows a governing principle of being specific without being technical and intelligent without being academic. This means avoiding jargon like 'disintermediated artisan-led economic models' in favor of plain language: 'Women sell their work directly and set their own prices.'

This approach ensures that the impact of a project is shown through evidence rather than told through adjectives. The platform avoids savior narratives and the exoticization of communities, ensuring that every project is presented with dignity and context.

Founder & Editor

Michelle Yastremsky is an editorial strategist, writer and founder of Sistra, exploring the intersection of travel, culture, storytelling and the women shaping places around the world.

Her story

Growing up between cultures and languages shaped how Michelle moves through the world: always noticing what gets translated, what gets lost and what gets passed on. More than a decade of traveling and living abroad deepened that perspective through volunteering, workshops and time spent learning from women-led projects rooted in craft, culture and community. After 15+ years in editorial strategy and storytelling, she created Sistra to connect those discoveries and make them easier for others to find.

What she's building toward

A more thoughtful way to discover the world through the women creating, preserving, teaching and building within it.
